Who among us considers themselves an activist? Are there actions that support such a designation? Life has many calls to action. There are endless missions, programs and causes to support. But, what is being done about poverty, class race and gender inequality issues right now? Is legislation or political action the solution?
This song doesn’t offer a solution. This song speaks to the fact that something needs to be done. this song says, that until we figure out what to do, we must exercise faith in a higher power. The view is born of desperation. The view is fueled by a hope for a better afterlife. This song says life is unfair, but while we have breath there is SOMETHING that can be done to change things.
When people get past themselves, and start looking at things as a collective, then we can start getting ideas together. So, this song is a wake-up call to those who are content. Some people that have worked their good government jobs long enough are not interested in doing anything to change conditions. Some people that are providing for their families are not concerned with the well being of the family across town with no running water or electricity. Some people believe this is a dog eat dog world. Some people’s actions say it’s every man for himself. The strong survive. That’s just the way of the world.
Well, as a musician I am confronting that way of thinking. I need us to see past ourselves and determine what can be done to help. If we don’t do anything, we will have no chance at abundant life. So, there’s an old religious element to this song. It’s like the negro spiritual “Soon-ah will be done-ah with the troubles of de world”. If we can’t solve the troubles of the world, we may as well focus on going home to be with God.
Personally, I’m not ready to pack it in and wait on Christ to return. Personally, I’m ready to engage in conversation to challenge mindsets, and brainstorm to come up with practical solutions. I’m aware of the scope of what will have to change. I’m aware of how strenuous changing minds will be. But, music is the most powerful force on this planet, so I’m giving it a shot!
