about

My friend, Phillip O. Coleman, was murdered by Chicago Police Department personnel. When you kill a songwriter's friend you never really get away with it. I will play this song as a memorial to Phil. You should too. If you have ever lost someone at the hands of a public servant like a cop, then yours is an exquisite pain like mine. May this song promote healing.

lyrics

We are here to shed light
On the unfortunate plight
Of a black man whose heights
Will never be known in whole
May God bless his soul
A Chitown night in December
Is when we begin to remember
A turn of events
With deadly consequence
My friend was losing composure
The brother couldn’t maintain
Something terrible was affecting his extraordinary brain
So he came to the conclusion that he’d get help from his mother
Having no other place to go
But the lack of self-control
Had already taken hold
And this obedient son couldn’t do as he was told
He couldn’t sit and relax
As his brain was attacked
So his mother tried restraint and in a blindness buddy pushed back
Mom fell and her leg was hurt so she called the ambulance
Buddy’s mind was full of regret Things hadn’t gone as he’d planned
The first responders showed up to help because his mom was hurt
Police looked for the criminal not the baby that she’d birthed
Around that time behind the house Buddy’s dad found Buddy grieving
He tried to console his baby boy something was wrong with him that evening
As he approached his son’s chest was heaving
Wild look deep in teary eyes
His arms opened to hug him and received the worst surprise
Buddy punched and knocked his hero down
As police officers approached their criminal had been found
Violently placing him in custody
A mouth full of blood so Buddy was unclear
When he spoke the last words his dad would ever hear
Apologetic remorse his dad trusted officers of the law
Not knowing their murderous course Because their emotions were raw
While in police custody Buddy’s temper flared so bad
That he was tasered beaten and restrained here’s where things really get sad
The cops tortured him until they thought he should be hospitalized
So they threw him in the squad car for the last ride of his life
In the hospital he still was wild but instead of sedating him to calm him
They continued the torture to death and the process of embalmment
And all I can do is write about how tragically Buddy died
Speak out for justice like that’s gonna dry the tears I cried
This won’t be swept under the rug Buddy was nobody’s thug
Business as usual was how it was played as his grave was being dug
It’s been over one year since they snatched our black, shining prince
Investigations still under way as they tamper with evidence
And all I can do is write about it and put it in a song
Hopefully the pain will go away because one of my best friends is gone
And the whole thing is so wrong Almost seems like a bad dream
The best and brightest of us all didn’t go out like a king
They abused their authority and the cops were minorities
From a quick look But sometimes what gets mistook
For black or brown skin is a badge carrying agent of evil and sin
I wish I had names to expose them
But it wouldn’t bring Buddy back
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
I would love to expose them
But it wouldn’t bring my buddy back
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
And hat can kill you if you’re black
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black
Life can drive a person crazy and that can kill you if you’re black…
